How to Care for Your Coat So It Lasts
Share
A good coat can last for years if you look after it. These simple habits help it keep its shape, colour and warmth.
Always check the care label first
Different fabrics need different care. The label inside your coat tells you whether it can be machine washed, how hot, and whether it can be tumble dried. When in doubt, follow the label.
Washing
- Close all zips and buttons and turn the coat inside out before washing.
- Use a gentle cycle at a low temperature, usually 30°C.
- Use a mild detergent and skip fabric softener on water-repellent coats, as it can reduce the water resistance.
- Wool and wool-blend coats are often best spot-cleaned or dry-cleaned.
Drying
Let your coat dry naturally. Hang it on a wide, sturdy hanger so the shoulders keep their shape, away from direct heat such as radiators. Padded coats can be gently shaken out while drying so the filling spreads evenly.
Between wears
- Hang your coat on a proper hanger rather than a hook, so the shoulders do not stretch.
- Empty the pockets so they do not lose their shape.
- Use a clothes brush or lint roller to remove dust and fluff.
- Let a wet coat dry fully before you put it away.
Storing at the end of the season
Clean your coat before storing it, so marks do not set. Keep it in a breathable garment bag in a cool, dry place. Avoid plastic covers, which can trap moisture.
