How to Find Your Coat Size
Share
Buying a coat online is easier when you know your measurements. Coats are cut to go over other clothes, so a few minutes with a tape measure can save you a return.
What you need
A soft tape measure and, ideally, someone to help. Measure over a thin top, not over a thick jumper.
The three measurements that matter
- Chest: measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape level under your arms.
- Waist: measure around the narrowest part of your waist. This matters most for belted coats.
- Hips: measure around the widest part of your hips. This matters most for long coats.
You can also measure your sleeve length from the top of your shoulder to your wrist with your arm slightly bent.
Comparing with the size chart
Compare your measurements with the size chart on the product page. If your measurements fall between two sizes, choose the larger size. A coat that is a little roomy is more comfortable than one that pulls across the shoulders.
Think about what you will wear underneath
If you plan to wear thick jumpers or a hoodie under your coat, choose one size up. If you mostly wear it over a shirt or blouse, your usual size is usually right.
Structured and tailored coats
Coats with a tailored cut, such as double-breasted styles or trench coats, have less stretch than padded or quilted jackets. With these styles it is especially worth checking the chest and shoulder fit.
