Layering for Autumn: Getting Dressed When the Weather Can't Decide

Autumn in the UK can start cold, turn mild by lunchtime and end with rain. Layering lets you adjust through the day without carrying a bag full of extra clothes.

The three-layer rule

  • Base layer: a T-shirt, long-sleeved top or blouse in a breathable fabric.
  • Middle layer: a cardigan, light jumper or blazer that you can take off indoors.
  • Outer layer: a coat or jacket that protects you from wind and rain.

Choose layers that work on their own

Each layer should look good on its own, because you will probably take some of them off. A neat cardigan or blazer that works over your top means you still look put together when your coat is off.

Mix weights, not just pieces

Combine a thin layer with a warmer one rather than three thick ones. A fine knit under a padded jacket keeps you warmer than a bulky jumper and is easier to move in.

Let your coat do the work

On changeable days, a trench coat or a light quilted jacket is ideal: warm enough for the morning, easy to carry in the afternoon. On colder days, switch to a longer or padded coat over the same base and middle layers.

Finish with accessories

A scarf adds warmth to the neck and can be removed in seconds. Ankle boots keep your feet dry when it rains, and a small umbrella fits in most coat pockets.

An easy autumn outfit

Long-sleeved top, fine cardigan, straight-leg jeans, ankle boots and a belted trench coat. Take the coat off at work and you still have a complete outfit.
