How to Choose a Winter Coat for the British Weather

A British winter is rarely about extreme cold. It is about damp mornings, wind on the walk to the station and rain that comes and goes all day. The right coat handles all of that and still looks good when you take it off indoors. Here is what to look for.

1. Start with how you spend your day

Think about where you will wear the coat most. If you walk or take public transport, warmth and wind protection matter more than if you mostly drive. If you go straight from the commute into the office, a coat that looks smart over work clothes is worth more than a sporty one.

2. Choose the right length

  • Short coats (hip length) are easy to move in and practical on a bike or in the car.
  • Mid-length coats (thigh to knee) are the most versatile and work with both trousers and skirts.
  • Long coats (below the knee) keep more of you warm and look elegant, but take a little more space on the bus.

3. Check the fabric and the lining

A coat with a quilted or padded lining keeps in more warmth than an unlined one. For rainy days, look for a water-repellent outer fabric. A wool blend gives a smart, structured look and handles cold well; it is best paired with an umbrella on very wet days.

4. Look at the details

A hood, adjustable cuffs, a belt or drawstring at the waist and deep pockets all make a coat more comfortable when the wind picks up. A double-breasted front closes more snugly across the chest than a single row of buttons.

5. Leave room for layers

In winter you will often wear a jumper or cardigan underneath. Try your usual size with a knit on, or choose one size up if you like a roomier fit. Our coat size guide explains how to measure yourself.
